Fullerton, CA- What’s worse than drunken driving? Texting and driving while also drunk, its double the danger. That is exactly what California police say one man was doing when he plowed into a patrol car while a deputy was in the middle of a traffic stop.
On Friday, a LA County Sheriff’s deputy had pulled over a motorist on Santa Monica Blvd when the accident occurred. KTLA reports that as the deputy was standing beside the vehicle he just pulled over, a driver in a Mercedes SUV slammed into the rear of the patrol car which then struck the deputy.
Per the police report, KTLA says that the deputy saw the SUV approaching and moved to get out of the way, but was hit anyway. The impact of the crash pushed the patrol car into the officer who was then thrown into the air. He landed on the hood of his patrol. He was injured but is listed in good condition, the TV station reported.
Police believe the 27-year-old man behind the wheel of the Mercedes was drunk but that’s not all, they also suspect he was texting at the time of the crash. He was arrested and charged with DUI, but it is unclear if he was also ticketed for texting and driving. Even if he is, that charge would be the least of his worries.
The officer, a nine-year veteran, was the only person injured in the collision.
