Chesapeake, VA- One of the punishments Virginians face for a DUI conviction is a requirement to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle. Such devices are effective at keeping many drunk drivers off of the road, but Virginia lawmakers say some drivers are trying to cheat, but they have a solution, one that many will see as an invasion of their privacy.
WCYB reports that new regulations were enacted this week which will require individuals who have an ignition interlock device must install a camera as well. The images captured will be reviewed when a person takes their car in for monthly recalibration.
Mothers Against Drunk Drivers estimate that many DUI offenders drive an average of the 80 times before they are charged, so ignition interlock devices, which measure a person’s blood alcohol concentration have become standard nationwide. In Virginia, if you are convicted of your first DUI and your blood alcohol level was 0.15 percent, you are required to install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle.
Ignition interlock devices are a real deterrent, but people are clever, and if there is a way to beat the system, people will exploit it. One of the ways drivers bypasses their ignition interlock devices is to have a friend blow in the device for them. Hence the camera which will capture the image of whoever is using the device.
Special Programs Coordinator for the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (VASAP), Chris Morris told WCYB, “The cameras are essential to circumvention attempts where somebody could potentially have somebody else blow into the device for them to start the car. The camera actually takes a picture of who is taking a breath test, so we can identify who it is.”
While it may be easy to cheat your interlock device, doing so is a big mistake and is probably going to result in additional charges and penalties. If you get into trouble for trying to cheat your breathalyzer, you need to speak with a DUI lawyer in Virginia to help minimize some of the consequences you face.
