A DUI conviction has the potential to affect your life in a number of different ways. Not only could it cause you to lose your job, but the conviction will also show up on a background check when you go to apply for another. Aside from impacting your financial livelihood, a DUI conviction can also lead to serious consequences that result in paying large fines and fees and even having to spend months or even years on probation. Because a DUI carries such hefty penalties, those who are faced with this crime are always encouraged to hire a DUI attorney.

While most are left under the impression that being convicted of DUI will only result in possible jail time, probation, and maybe even having an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle, the truth is, it can be a very expensive charge depending on the circumstances surrounding the crime. While one North Carolina offender thought he was getting off easy when his DUI charge was reduced to two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle because he had caused a drunk driving accident, the fine print revealed the real punishment.

Back in May 2017, 22-year-old Blake Andrew Pittman was given a “sweet plea deal,” according to the Charlotte Observer. His DUI charge was dropped, and he was given supervised probation which could have been jail time instead. Pittman had caused an accident back in 2015 on I-77 that caused two people to suffer serious injuries. His BAC, blood-alcohol content level was recorded between .09 and .11, however, the legal limit in NC is currently set at .08. While his plea deal appeared to be a good one seeing that he wouldn’t have a DUI conviction on his record, the amount of money he was required to pay in restitution is where it really it hard.

Restitution is an amount of money paid to a victim(s) “for certain losses suffered as a result of the commission of an offense, or losses that a defendant agrees to repay as part of a plea agreement.” Restitution covers financial losses suffered as a result of a crime [Source: United States Department of Justice].
