DUI Laws and Penalties in California
DUI laws were created to prevent drivers from continuously engaging in the act of driving while intoxicated or drugged. If someone makes the mistake and gets behind the wheel drunk, they are expected to learn from their first conviction that this isn’t acceptable behavior and is rather dangerous to do. Thousands of lives are taken each year because of drunk drivers and many are jailed for committing the crime. While some are able to learn from their errors, others simply cannot see how serious of a crime driving under the influence is.
A California man may be facing several years in prison for being arrested for his 9th DUI in a 6-year timespan.
California Man Arrested for 9th DUI in a Six Year Timespan
Some individuals who are charged with DUI generally find themselves taking part in the act another time before they realize what they are doing is wrong and places many lives in danger. But for one man, it seems he hasn’t understood the severity of the offense as he was recently arrested for a possible 9th DUI. Mercury News highlighted the details of the story shedding some light on 52-year-old Derek Stacy Haskayne.
According to police, officers were dispatched after 6:00 p.m. to the 100 block of South Lakeview Avenue in Placentia. An accident had occurred and witnesses were sharing the details. Apparently Haskayne had hit a pole and attempted to flee the scene. When police arrived on scene, they saw the vehicle that had crashed into a Southern California Edison electrical box and lay resting on it with live wires underneath.
The officers proceeded on to arrest the driver as they were under the impression that he was intoxicated. And when they began processing him, they soon realized Haskayne “had eight previous DUI convictions in Orange County since 2011.”
Because of all the prior convictions the driver had on his record from the last few years and the current laws he had broken, Haskayne was booked for driving on a suspended license, driving without a breathalyzer device installed in the car, and violating DUI probation. He is currently being held in Theo Lacy Facility without bail. Haskayne may want to consider hiring an experienced and highly qualified DUI attorney in California as the he could be facing some serious prison time.
