Newark, NJ- With winter weather gripping most of the country, two geniuses in New Jersey saw it as an opportunity to cover up a drunk driving accident. But police were not fooled by their shoddy attempt and both ended up being charged with driving while intoxicated.

On Saturday, Brian Beyers, 20, was driving a BMW that belonged to a family member in Sparta, NJ, when he ran a stop sign and slammed into a guardrail, according to the Huffington Post. Byers, who was drunk when the accident occurred, fled the scene.

Several hours later, Beyers and a friend Alexander Zambenedetti, also 20, returned to the scene after concocting a hair-brained scheme to cover up the real reason for the collision. According to NBC, they filled two 5 gallon buckets with water and proceeded to pour the water over the intersection where the accident occurred so they could blame it on black ice.

When police came across the two men, they found a shirtless Zambenedetti sitting behind the wheel of his car with the motor running. Police were confused about his state of undress considering it was only 1 degree outside. Zambenedetti explained to police that he had to remove his shirt because he fell into the water.

Beyers was in Zambenedetti’s vehicle with two buckets in plain view, one of which still had water in it, NJ.com reported.

Police said the two men endangered other motorists with their black ice scheme and had to call a plow to clear the intersection.

Police charged Beyers with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident and disorderly conduct for making the roadway unsafe, the Huffington Post reported.

Zambenedetti, who failed a sobriety test, was also charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving.
