Fort Dodge, IA- Authorities in Iowa are charging an Estherville woman with felony operating while intoxicated charges for her involvement in a fatal hit-and-run accident in June that left a pedestrian dead.
Police allege Jodi Hobmeier, 43, was drunk when she struck a 57-year-old woman walking along West Fifth Avenue North in Estherville just before 1 a.m. on June 20, 2014. After striking the woman, Hobmeier fled the scene of accident but later returned after enlisting a friend to drive her, the Sioux City Journal reported.
The woman Hobmeier struck was found lying in a driveway by witness and was alive when police first arrived on the scene, the Sioux City Journal reported. She was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
This week police charged Hobmeier with felony operating while intoxicated, vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident. Just one of those charges can have major legal ramifications

If they did drunken driving wouldn’t account for one in three fatal accidents and wouldn’t require the stiff penalties seen today. In Iowa those penalties include between 48 hours in jail up to one year and up to 18 months suspension of a person’s driver’s license.
