New Orleans, LA- Some people just never learn from their mistakes. Such is the case of a New Orleans man who was arrested for his 5th DWI after stealing and friend’s truck and causing a hit-and-run accident.
In February, police in Mandeville, which is about 35 miles north of the New Orleans, were called to the scene of a disturbance. Residents at the home told police that a family acquaintance, James Hittson, threatened them and then drove away in their vehicle without permission, WDSU reported.
As it turns out Hittson was intoxicated and shortly after stealing the vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run accident. He was soon apprehended and arrested for DWI, unauthorized use of a vehicle, assault and driving while suspended.
A search of Hittson’s record shows that he has five prior DUI arrests beginning in 1984, according to WDSU.
Hittson is just one of the thousands of motorists who continue to drink and drive. A Today report found that, based in FBI statistics, 300,000 people in U.S. drive drunk every day. And many of those who drive drunk do so despite having a suspended license.
As soon as you are charged with a DWI/DUI in Louisiana, you need to contact an attorney immediately, even if it’s your first offense. If it’s a repeat offense, you can’t afford to not have an attorney working on your DWI defense. A fourth or subsequent offense within a 10-year period is considered a felony and can have long-term consequences which include incarceration, suspension of their driver’s license and exorbitant fines.
In January of this year, Louisiana lawmakers passed tougher DWI laws which increased the minimum penalties and now require offenders to install an ignition interlock device into their vehicles or have their licenses revoked. The new law also called for increased penalties for individuals with high blood alcohol concentrations.
Some DWI offenders don’t understand the gravity of their actions and have this notion that they can avoid a conviction on their own without the backing of legal counsel. This couldn’t be farther from the truth and they soon find themselves is deep trouble. A Louisiana DWI attorney knows how the legal system works and understands what makes up a successful defense strategy.
