Louisiana Tightens Drunk-Driving Laws

USAttorneys

The state of Louisiana reported a 4% increase in drunk driving cases in the year 2014 as compared to 2013, with a total of over 1,400 arrests in 2014. Statistics show that this number has gradually and steadily increased over the years despite attempts to spread awareness about the dangers of drunken driving.

With this in mind, state legislators have passed stricter laws in the hopes of curbing the dangerous trend. According to Alexandria DUI attorneys, the tougher laws have been in effect since January 1st 2015.

If caught, drunken drivers could face much higher fines and even longer jail times. The new laws include punishment for underage drunken drivers who were previously exempt from the long arm of the law. First time offenders will be subjected to fines of as much as $300 and even jail time of 10 days, the consequences are also dependent on the level of blood alcohol content, under the new laws, the higher the blood alcohol content the higher the fines and the longer the jail time.

Suspected drunk driver kills bicyclist in Terrytown accident

28 year-old Jason Dejean has managed to pick up several charges while on a suspected drunken-driving rampage. Dejean’s 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck collided with a 52-year old bicyclist identified as Bernard Jones. Jones did not survive the impact and was declared dead by paramedics who arrived on scene minutes later. The incident occurred at 8 pm on Saturday.

Dejean’s decision to continue driving after the collision with the bicyclist made matters worse for him. He went on to collide with another car and injured its occupants who were hospitalized with minor to moderate injuries. Dejean has been charged with DWI, vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injuring (3 counts), and has been held at Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. State troopers believe that Dejean was impaired since his car was reportedly swaying from one lane to the other, which is usually a typical sign of an impaired driver. Blood test results are awaiting and may confirm these suspicions.
