William Henderson, 25, of Fingerville, faces multiple charges after he was arrested by the SC Highway Patrol for driving under the influence. According to police he had five young children in the car of which two sustained serious injuries.
Troopers say the accident took place in the Mayo area of Spartanburg County when Henderson struck an oncoming 18-wheeler along Highway 110 about 1.4 miles north of Cowpens while attempting to take a left turn.
Two children seriously injured, three in DSS custody
Henderson and all the five children, aged 11 months, 2, 4, 5, and 7 years, were taken to Spartanburg Medical Center. Troopers claim that only two of the children were in child seats while two others who should have been were not.
Two of the children suffered serious head injuries and were said to be in a critical condition, according to the solicitor’s office. They were being treated at a Greenville hospital. The solicitor during a bond hearing at the Spartanburg County Detention Center claims that three of the children have been placed in DSS custody.
Ex-girlfriend defends accused; shows completely illogical thinking
Amber Moore, Henderson’s ex-girlfriend and mother of the five children, has strongly defended the accused, stating he loved the kids. He just almost killed them though!
She said he had a drinking problem, which wasn’t a disease. So what?! He almost killed five children! Five children that deserve better parenting. Moore claims Henderson to be a fabulous dad and would never keep the kids away from him as long as he was supervised and without alcohol. But he is a drunk apparently.
Meanwhile, Henderson faces multiple charges that include two counts of felony DUI and child endangerment. He was also charged with driving under suspension and open container, amongst other charges. Bond was set at $23,664.50.
Driver has criminal record; is totally irresponsible it seems
According to the prosecutor, several witnesses reported that Henderson appeared to be under the influence and smelled of alcohol. Henderson has a long criminal record with charges of burglary, drug possession, and criminal domestic violence in the past. He record also indicates he was charged with petit larceny, public disorderly conduct, and driving under the influence, to name a few.
Since 2006, Henderson has also changed addresses several times. While jail records show Henderson as a resident of Gaffney, he has also been listed in Fingerville and Reidville.
Henderson has five kids and is only 25 years old
The prosecutor said that Henderson was found to be driving on a suspended license and failed to complete a court ordered substance abuse program following a previous DUI conviction. There were major concerns about Henderson’s frequent change of location, according to the prosecution.
During the bond hearing the accused said he understood his rights and was worried about the children. Henderson is required to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet and adhere to the guidelines of the state Department of Social Services regarding the welfare and safety of his children. He plans to hire a DUI attorney. According to Greenville SC DUI attorneys, he could be ordered to serve up to 15 years in jail and pay up to $10,000 in fines if convicted of felony DUI.
