Maryland School Bus Driver Accused of DUI Was About to Pick Up Children

Police stopped and arrested a school bus driver in Queen Anne’s County on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, as he headed to a local school to pick up children. Fox 5 News reports that two motorists called 911 to report a school bus driving erratically on U.S. 50.

State troopers eventually located the bus. The driver, a 54-year-old man, was given field sobriety tests and failed. He was arrested and charged with DUI and other traffic violations.

Fox 5 News reports that substitute driver was sent to pick up the middle school children.

Drunk Driving Charges and Your Job

You don’t need to be convicted of a DUI to feel the pain of your drunken driving arrest. An arrest will have immediate implications including driver’s license suspension. For some, a suspended driver’s license is an inconvenience, but if you drive for a living, your job is on the line if your license is suspended. You cannot perform your job if you have a driver’s license and you can be let go.

Commercial truck companies, transit companies, school district and many law enforcement agencies refuse to hire individuals with a DUI arrest or conviction. They also terminate employees with a DUI charge on their record because they become a liability to the company.

You might be able to keep your license which may, in turn, prevent you from losing your job, but you need to act quickly.

Other Consequences of a DUI

In addition to losing your driver’s license, a DUI conviction can result in up to two months in jail, a fine up to $500 and license suspension for 30 days. Those are the minimum penalties for a first DUI; you could face more stringent penalties depending on your blood alcohol concentration, if you have prior DUI offenses and whether you were involved in an accident.
