Birmingham, AL– A retired astronaut is accused of causing a fatal crash that killed two young girls while drunk. Now, the Alabama man could be facing murder charges according to reports.
AL.com says that the accident occurred ten miles east of Tuscaloosa on U.S. 82 around 2:50 a.m. when James Donald Halsell Jr., who was impaired, struck a Ford Fiesta carrying four passengers.
The two girls, ages 11 and 13, were ejected from the vehicle they were riding in with their father and another adult female whose relationship to the girls in unknown. One of the girls was pronounced dead the scene. The other girl was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The two adults in the vehicle were injured, but their injuries were not serious, according to AL.com.
According to CNN, an initial investigation pointed to speed and intoxication as the cause of the accident, so police charged and arrested Halsell, who is a five-flight veteran of NASA.
