San Diego, CA- With summer’s last blast right around the corner, San Diego’s District Attorneys officer released some sobering news about the state of impaired driving in the city. According to District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, DUI fatalities spiked this summer.
“This has been the summer of shame,”Dumanis said in Tuesday press conference, according Fox 5.
Her office said that since May 11 people have been killed in DUI accidents throughout which puts San Diego County on track to surpass last year’s statistics. The primary culprits, Dumanis said, are men between the ages of 20 and 25.
She also warned motorists that if they cause a fatal accident because they were drunk or high, they could spend the rest of their lives in jail.
Although DUI deaths spike, San Diego law enforcement has issued fewer citations for misdemeanor DUIs this summer.
In light of these stunning fatal accident statistics motorists in San Diego can expect beefed up patrols over Labor Day weekend and more sobriety checkpoints over the long holiday weekend. Last year, law enforcement agencies arrested 24 people for DUI, according to Fox 5.
