Fort Lauderdale, FL – An chain-reaction accident involving a drunken driver left a young couple dead after they spent the evening celebrating their 12-year-anniversary. Now that driver could be facing serious charges.

The accident occurred last Friday, May 1st on North Oakland Parkway. According to Local 10 News, the couple was in their Nissan waiting for a red light when a Kia struck their car. The force of the crash pushed the Nissan into another vehicle, and the two people inside were severely injured.

One of the occupants in the Nissan, a 35-year-old man, died at Broward Health shortly after arriving. His 32-year-old fiancé survived the initial crash but died a couple of days later Local 10 News reports.

After crashing into the Nissan, the driver of the Kia struck two other vehicles and attempted to flee the scene of the accident by entering a nearby mattress store.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the Kia driver was not arrested, but they suspect he was intoxicated at the time of the crash and said he may be charged down the road.

If the driver is charged with a DUI, he may be facing an aggravated DUI. Under Florida’s DUI laws, a person can be charged with an aggravated DUI if they cause an accident involving fatalities, serious bodily injuries or have two or three prior DUI convictions.

There are many consequences associated with an aggravated DUI conviction. Those consequences can include jail time and leave you with a felony criminal record. It is possible for a person to lose their license for life, as well.
